Old guidestone
The dark face is engraved 'Peniston'. 'Uden' can just be made out on the sunny side. To make sure you are travelling in the correct direction, face the name of the place you wish to reach and go right. Penistone now has an 'e' and would be reached by descending Green Lane, now a footpath , crossing the river and climbing the hillside to the north. Uden is Ewden. Another very large piece of stone, 46 x 51cm and 168cm tall. Grade II listed 1193130.

This guide stoop stands at the junction of Machin Lane and Peg Folly. It is inscribed Bolsterstone/Penistone/Uden (now Ewden?) and was probably erected in 1734. The convention was that the traveller turned right at the inscription to follow the required route

A guidestoop (Guidestone)
These were set up in the late 17th Century. This stone has Penistone, Bolsterstone and one other name (Ewden?) carved into it. It is suspected that the guidestoop is not in its original position but has been turned.
