Sheffield Supertram No. 08 in Park Grange Road near The Fellbrigg
Supertram No. 08 (now renumbered 108) was on its way to the temporary terminus at Spring Lane tram top, near City Road. Behind it can be seen the former pub known as The Fellbrigg. This was at 331 Arbourthorne Road, but with a side frontage visible on Park Grange Road. In 2002, several years after this view was taken, the owners sold it to the Church of England, for conversion into a church. This was to replace two others, which the Church felt were in outdated buildings. This proposed change of use provoked a big protest, because the pub was one of the few community facilities around, and its patrons preferred to have a pub rather than a church. The Church said they would be prepared to reconsider if people could come up with an alternative site for the church. In the end this apparently didn't happen and the building ceased to be a pub. It is now The Beacon - St Paul and St Leonard Church & Community Centre. While you might find spiritual sustenance there, you unfortunately won't find a pint of beer.

Park Grange Road and Spring Lane Tram Stop
Spring lane is actually the road ahead in the distance, climbing up to the tower block on the left. Supertram No. 17 (now numbered 117) is at the stop, which when photographed was the temporary terminus on this line. Park Grange Road winds its way through large areas of social housing. In 1994 the area looked pretty run down. Maybe it has improved since then. The tram was routed this way to help with regeneration. Image
