A Typical View of Suburban Sheffield, England
A view over the roofs of Bushey Wood Road, which leads from Abbeydale up to Dore village in Sheffield. The vantage point was gained from viewing over the valley of the River Sheaf.

Hair Salon and Tesco Express
On Baslow Road, Abbeydale Park; an example of neighbouring buildings both quite different from their previous use. Tesco used to be a petrol station and the Hair Bar was once a library. The Library at Totley is now Image

Wyvern Gardens, Dore
Wyvern Gardens is a cul-de-sac leading off Bushey Wood Road with views across the Sheaf valley. The houses here are much newer than those on Bushey Wood Road or Furniss Avenue to the south, so this is evidently an infill development. The Wyvern name has a strong association with Dore going back to the 9th century when the area was at the boundary between the kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria. In 829 Mercia had recently been conquered by the King of Wessex and it was here at Dore that the Northumbrians accepted the primacy of Wessex and King Ecgbert as overlord of all England. The wyvern was the war emblem of Wessex.

Tesco Express, Abbeydale Road South
On this day most roads were all but impassable for anything but 4x4s. Tesco quickly sold out of bread, milk, and all those things they normally sell in small quantities - empty shelves everywhere! This site used to be a BP petrol station, and before that a full service garage with Mobil pumps. Now it's busier than ever, despite a massive Tesco being only 2 miles down the road.

Christmas lights on Abbeydale Park Rise
This street has long been famous for its Christmas lights and decorations and raises money for the Sheffield Children's Hospital. In recent years more and more residents have joined in and many houses on nearby roads now also take part.

Laying new junction at Dore West
Part of the Hope Valley Capacity Scheme due to be completed over the next 12-15 months. The junction seen on the right was disconnected below the train last year and is out of service. The new junction will face the opposite way and probably won't be connected for signalling and operational purposes before the late autumn, if all goes to plan.

Site of former siding by Totley Brook Road
The siding has been disconnected for some time but local folk lore suggests Queen Elizabeth may have stayed there for a night in the Royal Train early in her reign. (Maybe the train stayed while she popped over to stay with the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth?) The crossover has just been disconnected and will shortly be replaced by one in the opposite direction as part of the current Hope Valley route improvements. Curiously the road parallel to the railway on the left is called Totley Brook Road. The Totley Brook is not here, but the Old Hay Brook runs parallel to the right, behind the trees and houses. Totley Brook and the Old Hay Brook meet just beyond the distant road bridge to form the River Sheaf. A train of empty wagons is returning towards the limestone quarries near Buxton.

Tesco top-up
Formerly a garage with filling station this site is now a Tesco Express. Deliveries queue up to restock the very popular shop. It's not surprising that the neighbouring Spar shop closed after a brief struggle against the competition - and local residents lost their newspaper delivery service. Tesco has gone from strength to strength. Double yellow lines don't deter trucks, even in the morning rush hour!
