Sheffield - S1 (City Centre)
A corner of Balm Green behind the City Hall from near to the junction with Holly Lane, looking at the commencement of Orchard Lane and towards Leopold Street. This is the rear of offices previously used by the former Sheffield Education Authority. Before the LEA took over these premises (circa late 50s) it housed the Central Technical School (a vocationally-oriented secondary school), although a stone carved sign incorporated into the structure declares it to have been a "Science School". Present use unknown.

Sheffield: telephone box in West Street
Sheffield seems to be rather well off for traditional 'K6' telephone boxes. This one is at the eastern end of West Street.

Former Pupil Teachers Centre, Holly Street, Sheffield
A Victorian institutional building which is not run-of-the-mill. Some of the features are curious. Clad in coursed squared, or rough, stone as opposed to ashlar blocks. Either side of the entrance are canted bays carried up as towers, giving it a slightly ecclesiastical (or fortified?) air. By H.W. Lockwood, 1896. Grade II listed.

Sheffield - S1 (City Centre)
With Balm Green behind & to the right of the photographer, this is the view along Orchard Lane with Leopold Street. Some modern office buildings and the former LEA offices (that housed the Central Technical School before that) vie in turn to provide shade and protection from the elements. Beyond the white
two-storey property at the end of this passageway is the locally-well known Orchard Square shopping mall. It seems that Orchard Lane ran into the Orchard Square area in earlier times. Legend has it that in 1879 Charlie Peace, a murderer (and local personality) who was on the run from the police, escaped through the window of a house on Orchard Lane.

Graffiti on a hopper behind Sheffield City Hall
Reflecting growing anxiety about waste plastic in the natural environment - partly aroused by awareness-raising documentaries aired on British television in preceding months.
