With Balm Green behind & to the right of the photographer, this is the view along Orchard Lane with Leopold Street. Some modern office buildings and the former LEA offices (that housed the Central Technical School before that) vie in turn to provide shade and protection from the elements. Beyond the white two-storey property at the end of this passageway is the locally-well known Orchard Square shopping mall. It seems that Orchard Lane ran into the Orchard Square area in earlier times. Legend has it that in 1879 Charlie Peace, a murderer (and local personality) who was on the run from the police, escaped through the window of a house on Orchard Lane.
