It's Coming Home, Sheffield!
Taken early during the England vs Italy match at the final of the Euro 2020 football tournament (staged in 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic), this photo shows an empty main road in Sheffield with the expectant message "It's Coming Home, Sheffield." As the city which produced the world's first football clubs and codified the game, Sheffield can make a stronger claim than most to be the home of football. In the end, however it was not to be as Italy beat England on penalties.

This long and prosperous road reaches out from the city centre to the wealthy suburbs of Ecclesall Road South and Whirlow. The area pictured is known as Banner Cross with the Banner Cross post office to the right.

Napoleon's Casino, Ecclesall Road
Signs of the times? The most prosperous looking building around is the casino. Next to it the Post Office delivery centre has queues of people collecting undelivered parcels - probably all those internet purchases before Christmas, the sales that are killing the trade of shops all around the developed world.
The next building is the funeral parlour, and then the dearest filling stations in western Sheffield, but on this day it was competitive. The site above that has been empty for many years, but a new development may be about to begin?

Napoleon's Casino after its extension and refurbishment in 2010. The gold frontage gives a real touch of class, wouldn't you say!

The Hallam Tower Hotel is now disused and falling into disrepair when it could have so easily been converted into student accommodation.

Blair Athol Road, Sheffield looking northwards.
Built between 1905 and 1925, the houses in this long suburban street were once testimony to Sheffield's industrial wealth and rising social aspirations. When snow falls the sloping, north facing street can be treacherous for motor vehicles.
