Tinker Lane, near Crookes
Tinker Lane meets Bolehill Lane. Tinker Lane rises up from Bole Hill Road and where they meet is the Walkley to Intake bus terminus.

This shows how steep Tinker Lane really is. I was a bit a weakling until I got a bike. I road up down here times many until I could pedal from bottom to top while still sitting on the saddle. It was a damn good place to sledge down, but a bit of a climb back up. Also shows three entrances onto the Bolehills; here, just up the road by the cottages and centre distance, via the steps.

The path in the foreground leads to Tinker Lane. Just to the left it merges and becomes Bolehill Lane. Bolehill Lane is the road ahead, which in the distance, gives way to Toftwood Road, on the left and Toftwood Avenue, on the right.

Bolehill Lane, Crookes
Bolehill Lane meets Toftwood Road, to the left and Toftwood Avenue, to the right. If you carry on straight across the junction and walk to the end of Bolehill Lane, before it takes a sharp bend to the right, there is a nice walk down to Clough Fields and several equally nice options to make your way down to the Rivelin Valley. I used to walk down there alone, when my age was in the single figures and there never was any reason to worry about doing so. There is a very pretty walk, in the valley, that follows the river from Glen Bridge to Rivelin Mill Bridge. My wife and I have walked that and carried on through to Baslow and back.

The Bolehills, near Crookes
These rocky outcrops are the remnants of the former Andrews quarry. The site was gifted for use of the people of Sheffield, as a recreational area. I went to Western Road School and we used a part of the Bolehills to play football and cricket. The field had changing rooms. There were also tennis courts and a couple of bowling greens and a children's playground. The houses front Loxley View Road and Netherfield Road.

A close-up of the rocky outcrop, in this former quarry. You don't have to dig down very far to find this sandstone. Woodfield Road runs along the top of this outcrop and four roads lead up from the main road to meet it. The houses fronting two of these roads can just be seen. Those on the right are on Stothard Road and those on the left are on Netherfield Road. The next two roads to the left are Loxley View Road and Longfield Road. All of these roads are built on field boundaries.

These are Cocked Hat Cottages, that were built around 1860. The Unwin family owned a quarry on the Bolehills and lived here. This end of the building was a stable with hay loft. The un-surfaced lane that ran by was called Cocked Hat Lane, from which the cottages took their name. Tinker Lane, which ends here at Bolehill Lane, rises here by 105 metres on its way up from Bole Hill Road. I once carried my wife all the way up.
