The northern corner of King George's Playing Fields
King George's Playing Fields were originally known as Mawney Park after the old manor of Mawneys. As Romford expanded, the Mawneys Estate was sold for housing development in 1883 although the land here remained as fields, and partly allotment gardens. In 1928 it was acquired and laid out as a recreation ground. Later Romford Borough Council received funding of £3,000 from the King George's Fields Foundation, and as a consequence it was renamed King George's Playing Fields. The boundaries are almost the same as those of the old fields, although the southern boundary is now the A12 (Eastern Avenue). The River Rom forms the eastern boundary of the park and is just beyond the trees ahead.

Trees with windswept snow on Mawney Road #2
Driving along Mawney Road from Collier Row towards Romford gave us this amazing view - clearly the wind has been blowing in the right direction and has managed to sweep the snow onto the trunks and branches of the trees that line the road, creating this classic winter scene! I believe we're now in square TQ4989, looking east-southeast along Mawney Road towards Romford.

Driving along Mawney Road from Collier Row towards Romford gave us this amazing view - clearly the wind has been blowing in the right direction and has managed to sweep the snow onto the trunks and branches of the trees that line the road, creating this classic winter scene! If only the road and pavements hadn't been gritted, this would've been a complete Christmas card! It would've been better if the weather could've held on just for another week and created this on Christmas Day! But we can't have everything! I can well imagine what this view would've looked like during the February snowstorm and when there was no traffic on the road! Anyway, enough imagining - this view was taken look east-southeast down Mawney Road towards Romford, just after the road changes its name from White Hart Lane.
