Redevelopment of Oxted Gas Holder
With the previous gas holder now demolished, this is the development that has taken its place (see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7031466 for a photograph from roughly the same viewpoint, with the gas holder demolition in progress).

The Oxted gas-holder
Seen from Morrisons' car park, on the other side of the railway. The gas-holder is no longer in use, and a body of local opinion would like to see it demolished without delay. And yet it is said that the UK's gas-storage capacity is worryingly low, sufficient to hold no more than a few days' supply: http://peprenewables.com/uk-gas-reserves-down-to-six-hours/ Much of the UK's capacity was lost as a result of Thatcherisation, with gas-storage sites ending up in the hands of asset-strippers. I'm yet to be convinced that the Oxted site is truly redundant.

Oxted station
A train leaving Oxted station on a sunny November day. The railway is electrified using the "third rail" system, with trains drawing power from a rail. This avoids the need for overhead wires.

Former grocer's shop
This shop just outside Oxted station is now a Nepalese restaurant, but a ghost sign "Cooper Family Grocer Provisions" gives away its original use. There are other words but not legible in this view.

Approaching Oxted station
A diesel multiple unit approaching Oxted on an Uckfield to London Bridge working. The siding in the foreground probably served a small goods shed but is long disused.
