Trackbed of former railway between Pulborough - Fittleworth
The railway in question was the former London Brighton & South Coast line that ran from Petworth to Horsham via Pulborough. This was opened in 1859 and extended to Midhurst in 1866. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1955 though goods trains continued from Petworth until 1966. Hidden in the trees is the site of Hardham Junction, the point at which the line was joined in 1863 by what is now called the Arun Valley line which is still open.

Former railway junction at Hardham
This is the point at which the former Midhurst to Pulborough line joined the Littlehampton to Horsham line. The latter is still operational but the line from Midhurst closed to passengers in 1955 and goods in 1966.

Arun Valley Line
Viewed from the footbridge that was originally built to allow canal horses a route over the railway as the barges were 'legged' through Hardham Tunnel below. The curve in the line was also the site of a former railway junction which existed between 1863-1966 when the Midhurst branch was dismantled. The buildings centre left are part of the Hardham Water Supply Works.
