The railway in question was the former London Brighton & South Coast line that ran from Petworth to Horsham via Pulborough. This was opened in 1859 and extended to Midhurst in 1866. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1955 though goods trains continued from Petworth until 1966. Hidden in the trees is the site of Hardham Junction, the point at which the line was joined in 1863 by what is now called the Arun Valley line which is still open.
