St Giles Church
There has been a church here since Saxon times which was the one most likely mentioned in the Domesday Book, however, the current structure dates from the 14th century. The church was built on a small promontory flanked by the River Adur to the south and west and Cowfold Stream to the east and is very much an estate church being near to the main manors of the parish, Shermanbury on whose grounds it is in, and Ewhurst which lies 300 yards to the north. Some restoration work was carried out in the 17th century when the chancel was extended and the 18th century when a new entrance was made in the west wall and again in the 1880s. Since 1888 a separate grave yard was consecrated to serve the needs of the parishioners based in Wineham and Kent Street. Taken twenty minutes after sunrise with the small tower attracting the first rays of the day whilst a light frost on the ground is only broken by my footprints.
