Patricia's Florists
On the opposite side of Oakhill Road from Image I remember this florist being here in 1999. The signs advertise a "retail development opportunity" which, I suspect, means that the old shop front will be lost.

Corner of Oakhill Road and New Street
Now occupied by a gentlemen's hairdresser (barber shop). At the age of 6 I lived for 6 months opposite, at 3 Oakhill Road. Another submission shows this as being Patricia's Florists.

Blatch & Shepherd, Bakers and Confectioners
This area of Horsham was developed in the late 19th century so this bakery (left) and shop (right) would have been built at the time. I don't know if the two businesses were associated then but it seems probable. The bakery has a first floor store complete with a roofed-over hoist for hauling flour sacks Image Sadly, this business closed in 2006 but the notices do not advertise the property for sale or rent. Addendum: Image began in late 2007.

Redevelopment of Blatch & Shepherd
The building to the left of the shop, which housed the bakery, appears to be having another skin added along with a new roof. The old model K6 telephone box has been replaced with a KX100 and moved beyond the boundary of the property. Also see Image before work began.

Hampers Farm
Records show this farm was in existence in the 17th century but it is almost certainly older. Now in Station Road this farm would have been on either Hurst Road or Oakhill Road before the railway cut through. Whilst I was standing outside Image taking this photograph I was approached by a lady who told me that she remembered that, as a child, she regularly saw chickens from the farm in the road where we were standing. You may find it hard to believe but the brick buildings on either side of the white building in the centre are not part of the original farm but were skilfully designed and built to be crammed in next to it so as to be "in keeping" with this historically significant building. It is reassuring to know that the local planning office is doing such outstanding work in not only preserving our architectural heritage but also endeavours to maintain the context of that heritage.

Hampers Farm
A 17th century (probably earlier) farmhouse engulfed in the tide of progress. The developers couldn't even spare a couple of metres of garden around this building. Don't you just know they were itching to knock it down but couldn't so they hedged it in as close as they could without making it actually impossible to sell.
