The Old Forge, Merchant's Place
There was a blacksmith's shop here for very many years, not sure when it closed but it was still going at least into the 1980s . In the building today there are a cafe, a body piercing studio and a hypnotherapy centre. The entrance to Garrard Street Car Park is at the bottom of Merchant's Place, with Western Tower in the background.

End of the walk
Last look at the entrance area of Friars Walk. Does not seem that long since it was built; now it is due for demolishing sometime. Below you can make out the entrance road to the car park which is on the left.

Novotel and Ibis Hotels, Friar Street
The two hotels occupy this striking new addition to Friar Street. As Reading doesn't have much in the way to attract tourists, I assume most of the customers are businessmen.

Station Hill, Reading
This road outside the railway station is where many of the town's bus services start and terminate. The area is earmarked for proposed and much needed redevelopment. The office block is called Thames Tower. The bus in the centre is one of a number painted in the blue and white hoops of Reading FC to celebrate their promotion to the Premiership in 2006. The green one is ecologically friendly one.

Novotel hotel
Relatively new in the last couple of years and built on the site of the old cinema that was there and the Blue Boar pub. The Hotel Ibis is next door to it.
