There was a blacksmith's shop here for very many years, not sure when it closed but it was still going at least into the 1980s http://rfa.readingmuseum.org.uk/detail.asp?ID=53 . In the building today there are a cafe, a body piercing studio and a hypnotherapy centre. The entrance to Garrard Street Car Park is at the bottom of Merchant's Place, with Western Tower in the background.
