Train to Hazel Grove
The introduction of electric trains on the Preston to Blackpool line has led to some longer distance workings. Here, a fairly new 'Civity' electric unit (331019) departs from Kirkham & Wesham station with the 12.28 Blackpool North to Hazel Grove via Manchester - a journey of nearly 100km and over 100 minutes. Compare Image taken nearly sixty years earlier: although there are fewer tracks and trains, the stations has actually gained a platform for eastbound trains in recent years, allowing the two tracks of the island platform to be used independently by trains to Blackpool South and North.

Kirkham & Wesham railway station, Lancashire
Opened in 1890 by the Preston & Wyre Joint Railway on its lines from Preston to Blackpool and Fleetwood, to replace an earlier station slightly further west. View west towards Blackpool shortly after the line was electrified, and a new platform and footbridge added. The track on the right and the platform from which the image was taken are on the site of the former 'fast' lines, for which no previous platform at Kirkham & Wesham was provided. See Image for a pre-electrification view taken closer to the road bridge.

Blackpool Illuminations Special at Kirkham & Wesham Station
View eastward, with a Special from Bradford (Exchange) to Blackpool (Central) passing, signalled for the Marton cut-off line. The locomotive is LMS 'Jubilee' 6P 4-6-0 No. 45694 'Bellerophon'. At Kirkham & Wesham station, the ex-London & north Western & Lancashire & Yorkshire (Preston & Wyre) Joint four-track line from Preston divided three ways: to Blackpool Central via Lytham St Annes or by the Marton Direct line, and to Poulton-le-Fylde and Blackpool North/Fleetwood.
