St. Mary's RC Church, Fernyhalgh
This beautiful old church sits amongst green fields north of Preston. Close by is the shrine of Ladyewell, which has a supposedly miraculous well and is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Catholic masses are celebrated in the church on Sundays, holy days and regularly during the week. This photograph was taken on Good Friday, 2006.

The Catholic graveyard, Fernyhalgh, Broughton
Fernyhalgh seems to be a Roman Catholic enclave, perhaps because of the nearby shrine at Ladyewell.

Ladyewell Nursery, Fernyhalgh, Broughton
This was built in 1836 (date in Roman numerals at the centre of the parapet) as a Roman Catholic school, and is similar to the Church of England 'National' schools of the same period. Notice the inscriptions 'Girls' on the left gable and 'Boys' on the right gable. The graveyard can be glimpsed to the right (see other photograph).
