Winckley Square, Preston
The eastern side of Winckley Square was largely redeveloped in the 1960s although no 9, in the middle distance, was never demolished. Beyond that the large Charles House was built as Inland Revenue offices.

Guildhall Offices, Guildhall Street, Preston
Pattern-book late 1950s or early 1960s curtain-walled offices. The sloping canopy over the entrance was a popular motif at the time. Formerly offices of Lancashire County Council. It has since vacated, or will be vacating, as, in common with many other councils, it seeks to save money by rationalising its estate and concentrating staff in fewer buildings.

Sir Robert Peel
According to a nearby plaque Sir Robert Peel, the Victorian prime minister, was 'well regarded' in Preston for his role in the repeal of the corn laws and his support for Catholic emancipation. He was not, however, born here (his birthplace was Bury, another Lancashire town) but he was resident at Penwortham Priory at one point in his life. Tamworth in Staffordshire has a better claim on him - he represented the town in parliament and he has a prominent statue there - but there is no mention of this on the plaque here in Winckley Square.

Winckley Square Gardens, Preston
This Georgian square was developed by William Cross who had been inspired by the squares he had seen in London. The first house here was built in 1799 around a pleasant green space which, unlike some London squares, is open to the public.
