According to a nearby plaque Sir Robert Peel, the Victorian prime minister, was 'well regarded' in Preston for his role in the repeal of the corn laws and his support for Catholic emancipation. He was not, however, born here (his birthplace was Bury, another Lancashire town) but he was resident at Penwortham Priory at one point in his life. Tamworth in Staffordshire has a better claim on him - he represented the town in parliament and he has a prominent statue there - but there is no mention of this on the plaque here in Winckley Square.
