Corn Exchange Building
The statue in front of the building marks the spot where in 1842 four cotton mill workers were shot and killed by the military as they demonstrated for a fair wage.

Third floor view from Premier Inn, Preston
Unfortunately through un-openable triple-glazed windows. The top 4 floors of a 5-floor building at the end of Fox Street. Beyond is the western elevation of the Corn Exchange, now a bar. The tall building in the distance is Lime House, an apartment building.

A pair of former warehouses with loading bays. The smaller no. 5 dates from 1888.
The words 'Seed Merchant' survive on the corner building.

Looking down Lune St to the Corn Exchange

Former Corn Exchange, Lune Street, Preston
Built in 1822-24, the architect William Corry. Grade II listed.
Converted to the eponymous pub in the 1990s (it may have closed since this photo).
The sculpture in front commemorates a local protest, part of the 1842 Plug Plot Riots, or General Strike, in which a number of rioters were shot by the police (Image]).

The Preston Martyrs

The statue was created by Gordon Young (also responsible for The Family in Gateshead http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%20and%20Culture/Art/ArtMaps/Pre-Angel/Family.aspx and A Flock of Words in Morecambe http://www.tdctokyo.org/awards/award03/grandprix_e.html ). The splendid Georgian Corn Exchange behind is now a disco-pub, sadly. It would be good to see it put to a more imaginative community use.
