See Image for an explanation. The statue was created by Gordon Young (also responsible for The Family in Gateshead http://www.gateshead.gov.uk/Leisure%20and%20Culture/Art/ArtMaps/Pre-Angel/Family.aspx and A Flock of Words in Morecambe http://www.tdctokyo.org/awards/award03/grandprix_e.html ). The splendid Georgian Corn Exchange behind is now a disco-pub, sadly. It would be good to see it put to a more imaginative community use.
