Hilgay's village sign has what appears to be a cannon but does in fact represent a Manby Mortar, invented by Captain George William Manby to rescue passengers from ships in distress near the shore. Despite being Great Yarmouth born, Captain Manby is buried in All Saints Church in Hilgay, at which the mortar is pointing. Above the name, the row of Xs are representing Hilgay Bridge which crosses the River Wissey. The musical instruments represent Hilgay Silver/Brass Band established since 1896 and still active. Metal plates attached to stone post by the UC road (was A10), in parish of HILGAY (KINGS LYNN AND WEST NORFOLK District), 15yds South of Stocks Hill, in pavement against brick wall, on East side of road. Erected by the Ely to Downham (North District) turnpike trust in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- : 14 : : 4 : Milestone Society National ID: NO_DME4.

Four different incidents but the single memorial is in memory of fourteen men who died when their aircraft crashed. Sgt. K A Worthington, of 56 OTU, Sutton Bridge, died when his Hurricane crashed on 4th January 1941. Sgt. A J Burley, of 56 OTU, Sutton Bridge, died when his Master II crashed on 16th February 1941. (For some reason P/Off. David Francis CAIRD who also died in the crash is not named on the memorial.) 2Lt W.C. DuMond, F/o C.C.Jones, 2Lt E.A.Matthews, Sgt C.N. Hartmann, Sgt R. Frost, Sgt D. Cursons, the crew of USAAF B-17 44-6816 (not 6818) of 728 Sqdn 452BG, Deopham Green crashed on 30th March 1945. (not 1944 as on the memorial) P/o B.E. Lymbery, Sgt K.W.Coates, Sgt W.F.Webber (RCAF) Sgt L. Crawshaw, Sgt G.M.Bayly, Sgt R.G.Mew, the crew of Wellington MkII of 218 Sqdn RAF Marham crashed on 18th May 1941.
