This unusually named pub, The Coalheavers Arms, is a small, one-roomed, back street 'local' dating from the 1850s. Perhaps the coalheavers referred to here (i.e. workers who either carry coal or shovel it) were associated with the Fletton Brick Factory? This was the only pub in Peterborough to have suffered bomb damage during WWII.

On the night of November 16th., 1940, it gained the unfortunate distinction of being the only pub in Peterborough to be bombed by the German Luftwaffe; in the spirit of the times, it reopened for business as usual on the same day. The Coalheavers was acquired in June 2002 by Individual Pubs Limited, a company which operates pubs supplied by Milton Brewery, an independent brewery based at Waterbeach near Cambridge. Despite its unassuming exterior, this real ale pub is a hidden treasure, tucked away on a residential street off London Road which would be very easy to miss if one were not aware of its existence.
