Cedrus libani - female cone
The Cedar of Lebanon forms these massive female cones, standing upright above the branches on which they are formed.
Each cone takes two years to mature: this is one of this year's, it won't contain viable seed until this time next year, when it will be dark brown. This cone has grown from a tiny wind-pollinated flower in around 3 months.

Cedrus libani - male cones
This is the same branch as Image, but shot from below, looking upwards.
The male cones hang down, and are much smaller. Like the female ones they take two years to mature, and next year they will grow an extraordinary finger that comes out, curves round and rises above the leaves, before releasing pollen to the wind, to pollinate female flowers that will each form another cone similar to the female one already photographed.

This box actually has a phone inside. I was surprised that nobody had submitted a photo of it before. It would have been interesting to see when it was last decorated.

Cedrus libani
Magnificent Cedar of Lebanon in the churchyard of Edenham. There is another at the church entrance, by the gate. This one overhangs the main A15, and one portion of that overhanging portion was removed in 2004. The cut branch can be seen above the centre of the road.
There was a fashion for planting this tree in the 1740s up to about 1800 and these probably date from then.

Edenham: the post office
Looking across the Main Street from outside the church, towards the frontage of the post office, which is essentially in the front room of a house and open for six hours on Mondays and on Thursdays. It does not incorporate a village shop. The George V-reign postbox can be seen in closer detail here: Image

Edenham: postbox № PE10 226
This George V-reign postbox is in the wall alongside the entrance to Image and has had its slot widened at some point since manufactured. It is emptied finally at 4:30 on weekday afternoons and at 10:30 on Saturday mornings.
