Cedrus libani - female cone

The Cedar of Lebanon forms these massive female cones, standing upright above the branches on which they are formed. Each cone takes two years to mature: this is one of this year's, it won't contain viable seed until this time next year, when it will be dark brown. This cone has grown from a tiny wind-pollinated flower in around 3 months. See Image for the male cones
