River Glen, looking northeast, from South Fen bridge
Less than 1 Km away, just beyond the farm, the Bourne Eau joins the River Glen. The Bourne Eau river banking can be seen entering the image from the left.

River Glen from South Fen Bridge
A yellow sign at water level warns boats to keep left because of an underwater obstruction, although nothing could be seen. The River Glen floodbanks are particularly high here. The right (south-east) bank forms part of the Macmillan Way, a long-distance route from Lincolnshire to Dorset.

River Glen on Bourne South Fen
The water level in the River Glen is somewhat reduced as presumably the parallel Counter Drain is taking much of the flow - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2632207. The Macmillan Way long distance path from Abbotsbury in Dorset to Boston follows the right hand bank here. This is typical Fen country with wide open skies, a straight river disappearing into the distance with banks raised above the surrounding land, and isolated farms and houses. The Counter Drain is away to the right and between the Glen and the Counter Drain are the Counter Drain Washes.

A rather drastic way to get out of your garden, but necessary in view of the metal piling as part of the flood prevention. These houses are near Bourne Eau pumping station.

The River Glen near Bourne, Lincolnshire
A short stretch of the River Glen passes through the South Fen and once provided a direct navigable link for Bourne with boats regularly plying their trade to and from the wharves along Eastgate. Here the river can be seen at the end of the South Fen Road near Tongue End, three miles south of Bourne.
