The Original Factory Shop, 15 Alvescot Road, Carterton, Oxon
The Original Factory Shop is a discount retailer of clothes, electrical and other items with over two hundred stores across the country. The premises used to be occupied by a branch of Somerfields, a supermarket chain. Following the purchase of Somerfields by the Co-operative Society, who already had a supermarket in the town, the Carterton branch was sold to Haldanes, a small operator of supermarkets. Haldanes hit financial difficulties and closed all their stores in 2011. Subsequently this became a branch of The Original Factory Shop.

Lloyds Bank Mobile Branch (1), Market Square, Alvescot Road, Carterton, Oxon
To their credit Lloyds Bank promised that when their Carterton branch closed on the 27th September 2017 they would ensure that the town was visited by a mobile unit. This large van provides this and currently visits the town on two days a week. This contrasts with HSBC who also closed their local branch in 2017 but referred customers to their Witney branch. No mobile unit for them!

Lloyds Bank Mobile Branch (2), Market Square, Alvescot Road, Carterton, Oxon
The mobile branch of Lloyds Bank. The yellow board on the pavement has nothing to do with the bank but relates to a trader in the town's market, which was being held around the corner in the Market Square.

Carterton War Memorial (1), Market Square, Alvescot Road, Carterton, Oxon
Originally this war memorial was located in Alvescot Road at the south west corner of the town's main crossroads. According to the Imperial War Museums war memorials website this was at OS Grid Ref SP 281 068. Fairly recently it was relocated to the new Market Square, adjacent to Alvescot Road and the Town Hall. Originally it was on a square two-stepped pedestal but since its relocation it has received a new two-step round pedestal. Also initially the relocated memorial had a small rectangular grassed area in front of it. This photograph shows the relocated memorial as it appears in July 2016.
The memorial has a flat column and stylised Maltese Wheel Cross with the WW1 inscription on a raised shield at the top of the column. Names of the fallen from other conflicts have been added below. The memorial is believed to date from around 1920 and is the responsibility of Carterton Town Council. The names on the memorial can be read here:-
