Originally this war memorial was located in Alvescot Road at the south west corner of the town's main crossroads. According to the Imperial War Museums war memorials website this was at OS Grid Ref SP 281 068. Fairly recently it was relocated to the new Market Square, adjacent to Alvescot Road and the Town Hall. Originally it was on a square two-stepped pedestal but since its relocation it has received a new two-step round pedestal. Also initially the relocated memorial had a small rectangular grassed area in front of it. This photograph shows the relocated memorial as it appears in July 2016. The memorial has a flat column and stylised Maltese Wheel Cross with the WW1 inscription on a raised shield at the top of the column. Names of the fallen from other conflicts have been added below. The memorial is believed to date from around 1920 and is the responsibility of Carterton Town Council. The names on the memorial can be read here:- Image Some of the information in this description is © IWM (WMR-31509).
