Bampton fire station, New Road, Bampton, Oxfordshire

An attractive backwater in Bampton with many old houses. It eventually comes out on Bushey Row.

From the north on the A4095

Mid/late C18 front block; rear wing C17/C18 in origin but remodelled C19 and 1895 as dated on tablet; mid/late C19 extension to front right, now South Elms. Limestone, with ashlar front and coursed rubble to remainder. Slate roof, C18 part with coped gables and flanking ashlar chimneys. Chimneys have moulded cornices. 2 storeys and attic, 3 bays. Projecting plinth, first floor band course, moulded cornice, coped parapet. Outer bays have Venetian windows with sashes and raised moulded stone surrounds. Single semi-circular arched sash to centre of first floor in similar surround. 3 gabled roof dormers with paired barred wooden casements and glazed cheeks. Central door is 6-panelled with glazed top panels and octagonal lower panels. Ornamental semi-circular fanlight with semi-circular arched stone hood on shaped stone brackets. Left gable end has large C19 sash with marginal glazing. Rear wing has hipped roofs, ashlar chimneys, and battlemented parapet of 1895. Near bay of this wing has paired 4-pane sashes to each floor; far bay projects, also with 4-pane sashes and slit window. Extension to front right and slit window. Extension to front right has 2 bays of 3-pane sashes with wedge lintels and keyblocks, the upper windows semi-dormers in gables. Arched panelled door in single-storey lobby to right. Interior altered, with rooms to ground floor left remodelled c.1830-40: front bay has moulded segmental arch over side window, on reeded pilasters; rear bay has arched niches with moulded pilasters. Circa 1815. Limestone, with ashlar front and coursed rubble to remainder. Welsh slate roof with flat stone gable copings and flanking ashlar chimneys, both rebuilt. 2 storeys, 3 bays. First floor band course. 3-pane sashes with stone lintels. Central 6-panelled door with semi-circular fanlight, keyblock and stone porch. Porch has attached moulded piers, capitals carved with oak leaves, and open pediment hood. Attached to left end of house is a tall 2-storey wooden extension. Later C19 wing to rear forms L-plan. To front of original block are contemporary wrought iron railings with fleur-de-lys finials and matching gate. Formerly known as St. Oswald, and marked as such on O.S. map. (Source:Historic England)

Just a quick one for the "boom boom" section. I guess the house on the right is Poshside.

Circa 1810-1820, possibly a refronting of a C18 building. Limestone, with ashlar front, stone slate roof, coped gables and flanking brick chimneys. Double fronted with blocked side passage. 2 storeys and attic, 3 bays. Plinth, first floor band course. Boxed 3-pane sashes with stone lintels, the ground floor windows C20 in altered openings, with C20 louvred shutters. Ground floor right window retains wider flat stone arch. Central 4-panelled door with radiating semi-circular fanlight, in fine stone doorcase with moulded open pediment hood on moulded pilasters with carved acanthus leaf capitals. One stone step. Doorcase is similar to that of Waterloo House, Broad Street, (q.v.). Traces of blocked passage entry to right. Small partly blocked attic casement in right gable. (Source:Historic England)
