The former Plough (1), 7 Broad Street, Bampton, Oxon
A long time ago this used to be a public house known as The Plough. One source states it closed in 1923. In recent years it has been used for self-catering holiday accommodation. By the 1950's the number of public houses in Bampton rose to 13 but this one had gone by then.

Just a quick one for the "boom boom" section. I guess the house on the right is Poshside.

Former Morland's Pub
This nice looking town house was once a pub belonging to Morland's Brewery in Abingdon.
The clue is the tile beside the door featuring the company's trademark Artist picture.
Both Morlands and its pub are no longer with us.

The former George & Dragon (1), Cheapside, Bampton, Oxon
A former Morland of Abingdon public house which closed sometime between 1988 and 1994, when permission was granted for its use as a private residence and which is now known as The Old George. Kelly's Directory of 1939 gives the publican as Mrs Kathleen Inch. In 1988 it was the late Alan Clarke, who was probably the last one. He later took over the Horse Shoe in Bridge Street.

The former George & Dragon (2) - Morland plaque, Cheapside, Bampton, Oxon
This plaque is on a former public house, now a private residence, which for many years was a Morland house. The Morland Brewery could trace its origins back to 1711. In 2000 the company and its assets were sold to the Greene King brewery in Suffolk. Greene King lost no time in closing the Morland brewery at Abingdon the same year. Production of Morland beers was then transferred to Suffolk. However the George & Dragon had already closed by the time of the sale so it never was a Greene King house.
The plaque, still in place to the left of the entrance door, commemorated George Morland who was a noted artist and painter. He holds his palette in one hand and a pint of beer in the other.
