Smithy Bridge, Rochdale Canal
This bridge has given its name to a station and also to a whole district, which has become one of the most desirable parts of Rochdale in which to live. It carries an important (although unclassified) road which is the main route from Rochdale to Hollingworth Lake. In this picture we are looking west at the newly restored bridge.

Smithy Bridge railway station, Greater Manchester
Opened in 1868 by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway on its line from Manchester to Leeds, the original station closed in 1960 and was demolished. It was reopened in 1985 by Greater Manchester PTE. View north east towards Littleborough and Todmorden. The original platform for this direction of travel had been on the far side of the level crossing, in the distance.

Train leaving Smithy Bridge (2010)
The train has left Smithy Bridge Station bound for Littleborough and beyond; the signal has been reset to danger; the barriers on the level crossing are being raised; and pedestrians are making their way across the tracks.
