A new housing development in Mill Hill beside Bunns Lane. The bridge on the left of the photo carried the road over the GNR line from Mill Hill East to Edgware. The line was closed in 1964 and the new housing is apparently built on the site of The Hale Station which, according to Barnet onLine, triggered development of the area. Bunns Lane takes its name from one of the large farms thyat existed in the area prior to the building boom.

Recalling the name of one of the larger farms in the area before it became a London suburb, Bunns Lane connects Mill Hill Broadway to Copthall. Here we see a 302 bus climbing to cross the redundant bridge on Bunns Lane as it heads for Kensal Rise from Mill Hill Broadway. The bridge used to carry the road over the extension of the GNR line to Edgware from Mill Hill East which was closed in 1964. The buildings on the right are a new housing development and are on the site of The Hale station which prompted the initial growth of Mill Hill back in 1906.

Thameslink electric unit 319 027 passes through Mill Hill Broadway on the Down slow line, working a Brighton to Bedford via central London service. The 319s were built specifically for Thameslink in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and were equipped for both main line electrification systems (25kV 50Hz ac north of London, and 750V dc south) to make through services possible. They are now in the process of being replaced on these duties as part of the massive expansion of capacity on Thameslink services.

The 319s were built specifically for Thameslink in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and were equipped for both main line electrification systems (25kV 50Hz ac north of London, and 750V dc south) to make through services possible. They are now in the process of being replaced on these duties as part of the massive expansion of capacity on Thameslink services.

View from the bridge that used to carry Bunns Lane over the extension of the GNR line to Edgware from Mill Hill East, which was closed in 1964. This is close to the site of The Hale station which prompted the initial growth of Mill Hill back in 1906 and I believe was located on the opposite side of the bridge. The track bed here is totally overgrown and recent building work on the opposite side of the bridge renders it unlikely that the route will ever be reopened - There remains a requirement to keep the route open for a possible future extension of the Northern Line from Mill Hill East to Copthall, but not this far.

Mill Hill station was opened by the Midland Railway in 1868 on its extension to St. Pancras. It was renamed Mill Hill Broadway in 1950. The station was rebuilt in the 1960s in connection with the construction of the M1 motorway, which parallels the lines here to the east. This view looks across the two slow lines towards the two fast lines on the far side.
