Mill Hill East station
The terminus of a short branch of the Northern Line, but built as an intermediate station by the Great Northern Railway on their much longer branch from Finsbury Park to Edgware, most of which is now abandoned.

Mill Hill East station
Stairs lead from the entrance near the camera up to the platform level marked by the building on the right. Built in the mid-19th century and eventually becoming part of the Great Northern Railway's branch from Finsbury Park to Edgware, this line was transferred to London Underground as part of the 1930s Northern Heights scheme. The intention was to electrify the entire network but war intervened: electrification to Mill Hill East proceeded in order to serve the barracks there, the station becoming part of the Tube in 1941, but the rest of the scheme was killed off by the war (and the subsequent Green Belt legislation which reduced forecasts for increased commuter loads) and the remaining line (which had continued in steam operation) closed in the 1950s. For more detail on the Northern Heights scheme, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_line.

Mill Hill East
The station and the bus stand viewed on a damp October evening. An Edgware bound 221 bus is collecting passengers that have recently arrived on a Northern Line train. The brightness of the rear LED lights fitted to the Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied bus is very evident from the reflection off the slightly damp road. On the right, a car can be seen leaving the station car park.
