Stairs lead from the entrance near the camera up to the platform level marked by the building on the right. Built in the mid-19th century and eventually becoming part of the Great Northern Railway's branch from Finsbury Park to Edgware, this line was transferred to London Underground as part of the 1930s Northern Heights scheme. The intention was to electrify the entire network but war intervened: electrification to Mill Hill East proceeded in order to serve the barracks there, the station becoming part of the Tube in 1941, but the rest of the scheme was killed off by the war (and the subsequent Green Belt legislation which reduced forecasts for increased commuter loads) and the remaining line (which had continued in steam operation) closed in the 1950s.
