A Holiday express from Derby proceeds from Yarmouth (Beach) station on its last leg to Lowestoft
View southward towards the buffer-stops; ex-Midland & Great Northern terminus of the line from Melton Constable and points westand north. The train is the one shown arriving in Image] from Derby. An ancient ex-Great Eastern F4 2-4-2T (No. 67176, displaced from its work on London Suburban services) is struggling out with this main-line stock for Lowestoft over the ex-Norfolk & Suffolk Joint line through Gorleston-on-Sea.

Beach coach station
An array of coaches waits to take day trippers home on a summer Saturday evening. The station occupies the site of the Yarmouth Beach terminus of the Midland and Great Northern Railway which provided a direct link to the resort from the Midlands, but closed in 1959 www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1435074 For a photo of the railway station in its heyday, see Image]

Site of the Yarmouth Beach railway station
This is the site of the Yarmouth Beach Station > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2326257 which was opened by the Great Yarmouth & Stalham Light Railway on 7 August 1877. It was closed 2 March 1959. By that time it was owned by British Railways (Eastern Region). After closure, the site was used as a coach station, with the platforms, canopies and buildings initially being used as waiting rooms. The station was demolished in 1986 and replaced by modern brick built facilities for coach passengers. Although the town served by the station was Great Yarmouth the official name for the station was just Yarmouth although Great Yarmouth appeared on station signs ('Beach' was added in 1883). A small memorial to the railway station remains in the form of a brick plinth containing about ten yards of track and two cast iron roof supports showing the logos of the M&GN and the E&MR, see > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6274592 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6274597 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6274600.

Great Yarmouth Beach Coach Station ? 1971
The interest of this picture apart from the coach is that it shows the re-use of the former Yarmouth Beach railway station. This had been built by the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway in 1877, closing with most of the former lines of that company in 1959. The long platform and its awning on the west side of the station were retained as passenger shelter, with coaches using the area formerly occupied by the tracks. This view https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6274595 shows what now fills the space formerly occupied by the platform. The coach seen here AMX8A, no.218 in the fleet of the Cambridge based firm Premier Travel, which was an important provider of local service in the Cambridge area and also long distance coach and excursion services. It is not displaying a destination, so is more likely to an excursion rather than a scheduled service. The coach is a fine example of the Harrington Cavalier model in its 36 ft long version, on an AEC Reliance chassis, originally new to Valliant of Ealing in 1963. This coach still survives (2020) in private preservation, in Valliant livery. This is one of a series of views featuring buses in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=2114547&displayclass=slide
