He died on 20 January 1943, aged 36, as a result of a training accident when an officer dropped a gand grenade, with fatal results and is commemorated on the Poringland war memorial.

This road is named after Trooper John Matthew Arthur Neale, who served with the Royal Armoured Corps, 11th Royal Tank Regiment. Born in Yorkshire he lived in Poringland, where he worked as a police constable. Trooper Neale was killed in action on 19 February 1945 while driving a tracked landing vehicle, supporting a Canadian Division on Operation 'Veritable'. He is buried in the British War Cemetery at Rheinberg, Germany, and is commemorated on the Poringland war memorial.
