The Abergavenny to Hereford railway line
I have travelled this line a few times over the years.
I always recall the station announcements at Newport station sounding like poetry; "the next train stopping at platform two will be the 11.39 Manchester Piccadilly train, calling at Cwmbran, Pontypool, Abergavenny, Hereford, Leominster, Ludlow, Craven Arms, Church Stretton, Shrewsbury, Whitchurch, Wem....etc. Almost as good as the Shipping Forecast...

Freight train on the Marches line
A Warrington Arply to Newport ADJ freight service near the summit at Llanvihangel Crucorney; once over the top it's downhill to Abergavenny. This is the railway from Shrewsbury to Newport via Hereford known as the Marches line. The front wagons carry scrap, no doubt destined for the then ASW plant at Cardiff docks.
There were lots of freight trains over this route in those days.
