The Priory is originally late 15th century, built as part of the Prior's Lodging of the adjacent Monmouth Priory. It was mostly rebuilt in the mid or late 19th century incorporating medieval stonework and features. The Priory was dissolved in 1536 and the buildings became a house. Monmouth is a market town at the confluence of the Rivers Monnow and Wye some 30 miles northeast of Cardiff. Although there is evidence of settlement in the Neolithic period, the town was established around the Norman castle which was the birthplace of King Henry V. The historic county town of Monmouthshire, the town is now a centre for Wye Valley tourism.

Memorial Written in Riddle.
I was told that the man buried in this plot believed if the Devil could read your tombstone, he would take your soul. This resulted in the unusual pattern of words inscribed on the stone.

Monmouth Priory
Monmouth Priory was found around 1080 as a Benedictine Priory. The priory continued until the Dissolution in 1536. Between 1814 and 1971 the surviving building was used as a primary school. I recall staying here in the spring of 1987 when it was a Youth Hostel.

Northern entrance to Monmouth Priory
From Priory Street. The Priory's website states that The Priory was founded in 1070 by Benedictine monks. Its church, now St Mary's Church, was dedicated in 1101. The parent Benedictine Abbey was
St Florent at Saumur in France. Monmouth Priory was endowed by St Florent, with some of its income going annually to France. This continued into the 14th century. The Benedictine ideals of prayer, study and hospitality are still relevant in the work of the Priory today. With the help of funding from the Heritage Lottery, the building has been restored and improved as an amenity for the community.

Monmouth Priory
All that remains of the Benedictine priory of St Mary, founded in 1075. Although much restored (by Seddon and Pritchard and G.E. Halliday in 3 phases up to 1896), the fine 15th century oriel window gives a hint of how the Prior's Lodging and gatehouse would have looked in the establishment's heyday. Now a community hall, the building was restored as a National School.

Monmouth Priory Gate
The National Lottery's Heritage Fund has been put to good use in the restoration of the priory in order for it to serve as a community building.
Now used for lectures, training events, weddings etc, the priory was founded in 1070 AD by Benedictine Monks and its church, now St Mary's Church, was dedicated in 1101 AD. Traditionally the Priory was connected with Geoffrey of Monmouth whose 'History of the Kings of Britain' chronicles the coming of Christianity, the departure of the Romans and the legends of King Arthur. The building has a beautiful oriel window with castellated battlements and is known as Geoffrey's Window. The Priory has a large and specialist collection of theological books , freely available to the Diocese as a resource.
Situated in Priory Street, above the River Monnow.
