Cornwall House, Monmouth
Today, this is to the rear of Cornwall House which stands on Monnow Street. This dates from 1752 and is built in a Queen Anne style. Today the garden, a double burgage in width, is mainly lawn and is enclosed, originally the garden would run back to Chippenham Park and the River Wye. At the time the house belonged to Henry de Bergh, the Duke of Beaufort’s agent. In the early 20th century the house was the home of Cornish doctor resulting in the house becoming named Cornwall House. The house is a member of the Historic Houses Association and is open a few days each year to the public.

Cornwall House is a mid 18th century rebuild of the Great House which had occupied the site for about a century. The house was divided into two houses c1860. Grade II (star) listed in 1952 as one of the finest houses in Monmouth town centre. Part of the building has been the main office of the Monmouthshire Beacon newspaper since 1987.

Cornwall House, numbers 56 and 58 Monnow Street is one of the finest houses in Monmouth. On the site of a 16th century inn and a later building called Great House. The house was rebuilt in brick in 1752 with the main front facing Chippenham. Circa 1800, a rear block was remodelled as the house was "turned round" to face Monnow Street. The house was divided into two around 1860, and the top storey of the Monnow Street front may date from then. Number 56 is the offices of the Monmouth Beacon newspaper. Some early original internal features and fittings remain. Monmouth is a market town at the confluence of the Rivers Monnow and Wye some 30 miles northeast of Cardiff. Although there is evidence of settlement in the Neolithic period, the town was established around the Norman castle which was the birthplace of King Henry V. The historic county town of Monmouthshire, the town is now a centre for Wye Valley tourism.
