Mystery objects, John Frost Square, Newport
Two large spheres, under wraps and fenced off, have recently appeared in John Frost Square. My first thought was it had something to do with the upcoming 2010 World Cup (football), but the most likely explanation is oversized golf balls in view of the 2010 Ryder Cup being held at the nearby 2010 course. There is already a digital clock http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1877955 in a corner of the square, counting down the days, hours and minutes remaining till the start of the Ryder Cup on October 1st 2010. Update : the mystery objects are spherical fountains. http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1912779

Spherical fountains, John Frost Square, Newport
Two metallic spherical fountains were installed in John Frost Square at the end of May 2010. The steel water features are part of a £3.8 million city enhancement programme funded by the Welsh Assembly. The intent is to improve public areas for residents and visitors to the Ryder Cup, to be held in October at the Celtic Manor Resort in the east of the city. Other work completed in the square includes the painting of disused shops and newly-laid yellow tarmac to brighten up the area as well as new benches and bins.

Newport County SuperDragon, Newport Bus Station
This is one of 60 SuperDragons that appeared in various locations in Newport in mid-July 2010. This one is located at the southern end of Newport bus station. Its black and amber colours are dedicated to Newport County football team, winners of the 2009-2010 Blue Square South, finishing an astonishing 28 points ahead of the second-placed team. A plaque on the sculpture also commemorates the original Newport County team (1912-1989) The SuperDragons are part of Newport Festival 2010. They are all the same basic shape but are coloured and designed differently. Other designs include a flashing coloured-lights dragon, a zebra pattern http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1971008, and one made from recycled materials. The SuperDragons will be auctioned off at the end of October 2010 with proceeds going to the official Ryder Cup charity Tenovus and the Born Free Foundation.
