Newport: cross on the High Street
This cross stands at a roughly 60° turn in the High Street and, since this was taken at just after 4pm, looking at it now I am baffled as to how the sun seems to have been shining from the left, with its shadow being cast to the right (west). The pentagonal base is currently hosting the shadow of the buildings on the right, which also put into shade all but the upper section of the frontages across the road.

Preaching Cross replica, High Street, Newport
Located alongside the former head post office http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3272076 and central telephone exchange,
this is a replica of the preaching cross which was found during construction of the nearby Town Bridge over the River Usk in 1926. The original cross, kept in Newport Museum, dates from c1450-1500.
A preaching cross, sometimes surmounting a pulpit, was erected outdoors to designate a preaching place.
