Located alongside the former head post office http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3272076 and central telephone exchange, this is a replica of the preaching cross which was found during construction of the nearby Town Bridge over the River Usk in 1926. The original cross, kept in Newport Museum, dates from c1450-1500. A preaching cross, sometimes surmounting a pulpit, was erected outdoors to designate a preaching place.
