Above Braunston Tunnel

Braunston Tunnel
The tunnel has no towpath and is 15 foot 7 inches wide by 12 foot 3 inches high. Behind this view is an 'S' bend caused by the primitive setting out procedures.

Daventry - Ashby Road
The track which the horses took over Braunston Tunnel crosses Ashby Road (A361) and is also a road leading to Welton Place Farm.

Grand Union Canal: Braunston Tunnel: The infamous S-bend!
This is the point in the tunnel where the excavated bores from either end did not quite meet one another in the middle, creating the infamous S-bend. But, hey, this was 1790's surveying setting out, so they were probably grateful that they did not miss one another entirely, as they would have still been excavating today... Anyway this bend can be a problem if two long narrowboats meet one another at it. The location co-ordinates are somewhat crude and estimated from the times of the camera exposures at Image and Image, two minutes after the former and eight before the latter. So if you are a boater going at a steady cruising pace the S-bend is about eight minutes into the tunnel from the eastern end...!

Knole Way, Middlemore
The streets on this new housing development are named after National Trust properties. It is pleasing to see that some of the original trees have been left in place, including the sycamore here.

Looking along Farnborough Drive from its junction with Hidcote Way. Work on this large new housing development to the north of Daventry began in 2002 on land once part of Middlemore Farm.
