Nottingham University Boathouse
The other Trentside boathouses are Victorian or Edwardian, but this one, recently renovated, is Art Deco. The Brian Clough Stand (once the Pop Side) at Nottingham Forest football ground forms a shadowed backdrop on a bright September evening.

Trent Lock: Grantham Canal
This is Lock 1, on the Grantham Canal, has been restored by the Grantham Canal Partnership but is now permanently sealed by Severn Trent Water Authority. There are flood gates immediately above the wooden lock gates in the centre of the photograph.
The aim of the Restoration Society is to open up the canal as a fully navigable route along its whole length and it had a boost in March 2008 when the East Midlands Development Agency agreed to put £65,000 towards a study which will decide the best connecting route to the River Trent. It is most unlikely that the original route through West Bridgford could be used as there has been major disruption due to road building and residential development. There have been several alternative routes suggested over the years and this study will assess all of them as to their viability. It is expected that creating a new link to the Trent will cost over 10 million pounds.

A dried-out stretch of the Grantham Canal
Looking towards Radcliffe Road from the derelict lock where the canal once met the River Trent. The canal was abandoned in 1936 and there are truncated sections of it in West Bridgford. At the end of the drought summer of 2022 this short stretch between the Trent and Orston Road had very little water. Part of the back of the Brian Clough Stand at Nottingham Forest football ground shows above the trees on the right.

A derelict lock and The City Ground
This is the first lock on the Grantham Canal, abandoned in 1936. There are two filled-in lengths of the canal between here and Radcliffe Road and no prospect of joining these truncated sections to the rest of the canal through the Vale of Belvoir, some of which has been restored. The University boathouse is on the right of the picture and the Brian Clough Stand at Nottingham Forest football ground behind. The bright red steelwork is part of the Bridgford End of the ground.
