King John's Palace, Kings Clipstone
This is all that remains of a substantial royal palace and hunting lodge that was a favoured residence of kings for over two hundred years - from Henry II to Richard II. It is likely that in later centuries the site was effectively used as a quarry by local builders and farmers.

Buttercups surrounding King John's Palace
The means of access to this small ruin, standing in the middle of a field, is not obvious. Look for a gate at the bend in the B6030 at the south end of Kings Clipstone at SK 6027 6465.

Royal Hunting Lodge at Clipstone
Known locally as 'King John's Palace'- all that remains of the Royal Hunting Lodge at Clipstone in Sherwood Forest. First documented in 1164 it was used by successive kings, Edward I held parliaments here, but dedcayed by 1525.
