Morning sunlight, Stanford Street
These former tenement lace factories and warehouses are typical of Nottingham. The further one, on the corner of Castle Gate, has a clerestory roof, which provided more light on the top floor, where the most delicate work was done.

Sunlit warehouses on Stanford Street
A view from the corner of Castle Gate, taken a little before nine o'clock on what was to be a glorious late-September day. On the left is the side of one of Nottingham's finest Georgian houses - see Stephen Richards' Image] and my Image] and Image The former textile warehouses are now offices.

The rear of 19 Castle Gate
This is one of the grandest 18th-century houses in Nottingham, built in 1776. For more about it, and views of the street frontage, see Image] and Image The fine houses on Castle Gate, Low Pavement and Middle Pavement were prized because their south-facing windows and gardens had views over the Meadows (then meadows and yet to be built on) towards the Trent and the wolds beyond. The picture was taken at dusk on a hot June evening, so its colour is muted.

Castle Gate: 18th-century houses
No 19, on the corner of Stanford Street, dates from 1776 and is a rebuilding of a grand house built for Viscount Howe, brother of the victor of The Glorious First of June. For a closer look, see Image No 17, next to it, dates from the middle of the century and is now occupied by a wine merchant. The sun had yet to break through on a May morning.
