Newstead Abbey House, site of the priory church
The scaffolding shrouds the 13th century west front which has been on the buildings at risk register. The site of the church is a scheduled monument separate from the Grade I Listing of the house and priory front. The church was demolished shortly after the Dissolution to provide building material for the house.

Former west front of Newstead Abbey
Catching the November sunlight, the ecclesiastical Gothic architecture of the west front of the Augustinian priory contrasts with the style of the rest of the house. Since there is now nothing behind it, I am led to wonder why the west front was retained when the Abbey was converted for residential use; a talking point for guests, perhaps?

Newstead Abbey, Ravenshead, Notts
Although best known to most people as the former home of Lord Byron, the romantic poet, the Priory of St Mary of Newstead - a house of Augustinian Canons - was founded by King Henry II in approximately 1163 as one of many penances he paid following the murder of Thomas Becket. Contrary to its current name it was never an abbey, but a priory. In the late C13th the priory was rebuilt and extended. This is a view of the C13th West Front, the only surviving part of the former priory church. It is Grade I-listed.
