Although best known to most people as the former home of Lord Byron, the romantic poet, the Priory of St Mary of Newstead - a house of Augustinian Canons - was founded by King Henry II in approximately 1163 as one of many penances he paid following the murder of Thomas Becket. Contrary to its current name it was never an abbey, but a priory. In the late C13th the priory was rebuilt and extended. This is a view of the C13th West Front, the only surviving part of the former priory church. It is Grade I-listed.
