Thurgarton Priory
View from the footpath on Castle Hill. Like many monasteries the priory is situated in the bottom of a somewhat secluded valley, with a plentiful supply of water.

Thurgarton Priory
The church and the house. The nave roof is a 19th century alteration, and the lancets in the gable are of this period. Originally the nave would have been much higher, and there is evidence of this on the side of the tower. However, the main west door is original. This and the tower date from around 1230. The house dates from 1772 and takes the place of the original conventual buildings.

Thurgarton Priory, west front
The Georgian house dates from 1777 when it replaced a 16th/17th century house built by the Cowper family on the site of the monastic buildings of the former Augustinian Priory. The 13th century undercroft of the west range survives under the house. The lower extensions of the house are 19th century additions contemporary with the rebuilding of the church by Nottingham architect Thomas Hine. The house is Listed Grade II*.
It was for many years owned by the Boots Company as a research centre but is now in private ownership. At the end of the 19th century it was the palace of the Bishop of Southwell.
