The Georgian house dates from 1777 when it replaced a 16th/17th century house built by the Cowper family on the site of the monastic buildings of the former Augustinian Priory. The 13th century undercroft of the west range survives under the house. The lower extensions of the house are 19th century additions contemporary with the rebuilding of the church by Nottingham architect Thomas Hine. The house is Listed Grade II*. It was for many years owned by the Boots Company as a research centre but is now in private ownership. At the end of the 19th century it was the palace of the Bishop of Southwell.
